Adhesion and metastasis

Both the dissemination of cancerous cells from the primary tumor and local recurrence post-treatment represent two scenarios that have few therapeutic options.

Our group is focused on the molecular understanding of the intricate genetic and epigenetic programs conferring a metastatic and/or recurrent ability to tumor cells. Our aim is the identification of novel vulnerabilities for therapeutic modeling.

To this end, we have developed syngeneic autochthonous models of metastatic dissemination by genomic edition, using CRISPR/Cas9, in lung cancer and in osteosarcoma. Moreover, we have set up new syngeneic models of recurrence post-radiation in breast cancer thus enabling us to identify novel molecular targets of potential clinical use. 

For validation, we are using a multidisciplinary strategy that combines genetic edition in vitro, genetically engineered mouse models, multi-“omics” technologies, in vitro functional assays, as well as sophisticated imaging technologies (in vivo bioluminescence, fluorescence and microCT and microPET).

In collaboration with the Clínica Universidad de Navarra and the pharmaceutical industry, we are testing novel therapeutic compounds with potential use in these clinical scenarios, hoping to ameliorate life expectancy of patients.
