Dra. Isabel Pérez-Otaño

Dr. Pérez-Otaño joined the Neuroscience Department of CIMA in 2004. Where she directs the

Cellular Neurobiology Laboratory. She is a recipient of Young and Independent Investigator

Awards from the National Alliance for Research in Schizophrenia and Depression and the Brain and Behavior Fund, and has been awarded Research Grants from the Hereditary Disease Foundation (USA), Marie Curie International Program and Spanish Government funding agencies. Her team at CIMA is involved in "The Spanish Ion Channel Initiative" funded by the Consolider program.

She participates as an independent expert advising the European Commission on science funding. Recent discoveries from her group identified aberrant reactivation of synaptic pruning as an early cause of Huntington´s disease, and her group is undertaking a translational effort to translate this knowledge into therapies.

Formación académica
Dr. Pérez-Otaño received her Ph.D. in Neuropharmacology from the University of Navarra, Spain.

Estancia postdoctoral
Dr. Pérez-Otaño took postdoctoral training with Professor Steve Heinemann at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, San Diego, USA (1996-2001), and then worked with Drs. Donald Lo and Michael Ehlers at the Neurobiology Department of Duke University, USA (2001-2004) on the cell biology of glutamatergic neurotransmission.
She has been a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University, USA (2010).

Actividad docente
Dr. Pérez-Otaño is engaged in the teaching and mentoring of undergraduate medical and biology students, predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows. She has an appointment in the Department of Pharmacology of the University of Navarra, her formal teeching responsibilities include teaching doctoral and master courses.

Áreas de investigación
Her work focuses on identifying cell biological pathways that underlie the proper development and maintenance of synaptic circuits, and on exploring links of these pathways to impaired cognition and brain disease.
